Another feature of the GM unit is that a new or remanufactured unit can be flash programmed to become another part number. There are a number of companies that manufacture flash programming equipment and are available to the aftermarket. However this is not a job for the amateur, as the ECM can be destroyed if the wrong numbers or programs are accidentally entered.
